TWO, THE TOP OF BROAD OF MOUNTAIN

Screw-stem, Bartonia paniculata, is in the wetlands near the top of Broad Mountain. (1, 25, 45)

“This species was located on sphagnum hummocks along a seep in a Hemlock Palustrine Forest.” (1, 45)

A Scrub Oak Shrubland Natural Community, “was also identified near the site.” (1, 25)

“This site had scattered pitch pines and other shrubs such as sheep’s laurel and lowbush blueberry.” (1, 45)

At “Broad Mountain West” a “locally significant site was identified…The area has a potential Ridgetop Dwarf-tree Forest / Pitch Pine – Scrub Oak Barrens Natural Community.” (1, 34), Note, this is site is probably not at all in the second box marked in the quadrangle above.

In regards to the soil associations at or about Broad Mountain, we find that the Hazleton-Drifton association, “covers most of Penn Forest Township and Broad Mountain.” (2, 2), We also read that these soils, “are suited to tilled crops and pasture. Most of the acreage is wooded. There are few roads and only a few persons live in the area year round.” (2), The soils in this association are described as consisting of the Hazleton soils most extensively, and furthermore they are reported to be layered or made like they are in words as follows:

1, yellowish-brown surface level, 2, yellowish-brown to strong brown subsoil, 3, Drifton soils are in the third layer, thicker and darker, slightly they say, light yellowish-brown subsoil, 4, well-drained Dekalb, and the poorly drained Alvira, 5, poorly drained Shelmadine, 6, very poorly drained Lickdale and Tughill soils. (2, 2)

Brief note on soils, many words and titles here, but what exactly do we find the definition of a soil association to be, as follows from the same source,

“scientists determined the color, texture, structure, consistence, drainage, reaction, and other characteristics that would enable him to map boundaries of soils on aerial photographs and to name and classify the soils. In addition, he obtained samples of the souls, which he sent for chemical and mechanical analyses to the soil laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University.” (2, 1)

We learn further,

“All soils of a series are nearly alike in their characteristics within defined limits, except for the texture of the surface soil,” (2, 1)

Regarding the Hazelton-Drifton soil association, we read as follows,

“It consists of soils of the Hazleton and Drifton series and several minor souls. The grouping of the associated soil series is based on topographic position, parent material, slope, natural drainage, or other criteria.” (2, 1)

Generally, we are told that, “Each kind of general soil area, or soil association, as a rule, contains a few major soils and several other minor soils, in a pattern that is characteristic, although not uniform.” (2, 2), This point is relevant to the hypothesis stated at top, albeit not completely, that following from observation in the Glen Onoko Ravine, the Broad Mountain Forest, however it is defined, is such a kind of location that does exhibit the characteristic of what we shall so name SOWS. SOWS are man-made, garden-esque, botanical creations in the sense of not quite agriculture, but more like groomed landscape made for specific purpose and it is by this understanding, at present time general alone, of the soil associations in the County, as best as we can find the reports online or perhaps in print, these soil types and the vegetation that thereof comes forth is now of our focus in the majestic series that is online in tandem to ENHAKKORE in print. We continue apace and follow forward to revelation on course.

1, The Tunkhannock-Connoton soil association was regarded as important in the original post on the missing soil at the site numbered 1 above. We furthermore return to the description of these bodies of soil in what is called reference 2, authored by the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Serivce, the Pennsylvania State University College of Agriculture and Experiment Station, and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Commission, and this pdf on the usda dot gov domain published in 1959, rather ancient in fact.

In regard to the T-C association, we read on page 4 as follows, “The complex slopes of the Tunkhannock soils are mostly in trees. These soils are used as sources of sand and gravel.” (2, 4), This association also includes, “small areas of very poorly drained soils and spots of Muck and Peat. In addition, moderately well drained Middlebury and poorly drained Holly soils are on narrow flood plains.”

What exactly is a flood plain, in the technical sense of geologic and physiographic terminology, from reference 3 please,

“A floodplain, or flood plain, is flat or nearly flat land adjacent to a stream or river that experiences occasional flooding.”

Furthermore, “A stream with a steep gradient will tend to downcut faster than it causes lateral erosion, resulting in a deep, narrow channel with little or no floodplain at all.

In the context of Broad Mountain, we sought to begin to attempt to locate the true, the TRUE source of ENHAKKORE. This on Christmas Day looks as follows,

These remarks are on the waterflow that does occur prior to entering the proper RAVINE. This is the Broad Mountain, that part of what is called the BROAD MOUNTAIN, or perhaps THE PISGAH SLOPE, or other times MAUCH CHUNK, THE MOUNTAIN OF THE BEAR, or sometimes THE HILL OF THE BEAR. The water course does appear in our trip to the source, just barely begun, THE JAW, indeed, the course of this water does come down from elevation that may be assessed from the QUADRANGLE OF WEATHERLY as seen above, whereby at the EAST of what is named HUGHES SWAMP, we achieve elevations marked as high as 1,780′ above sea level, wherein THE RAVINE does terminus at or about thirteen-hundred feet or thereabout, perhaps as high as 1,500′ up in the TWO PHOTOGRAPHS here above, how high exactly is not quite exactly determined as yet, but we are to say, the source of water that is still in hiding does likely COME FORTH from down below HIGHER ABOVE and may be in the VICINITY of HOW HIGH CAN THEY BE, near 1,800′, such that the grade down gradually on the BROAD MOUNTAIN, nearly, at least so it seems, through the soil associations thereof, as seen in THE FIRST OF TWO up above, THE WATER OF LIFE, that, that we call, THE DAUGHTERS OF HEAVEN, LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN.
