Maintaining Your Feet: Manual Toe Stretches For Plantar Fascia Pain

“Man is nothing but a featherless biped” – Plato (most likely apocryphal)

As one of the few true bipedal species on the planet, Homo sapiens sapiens’ (that would be you) top spot on the food chain is riding on our feet, as if your entire body wasn’t enough. You could argue modern deskbound culture has turned humans into occasional bipeds, like when your dog stands up on his hindlegs for that brief magical second while trying to nab a cheeto off your lap. Modern humans sit too much, eat too many cheetos (put them down), wear strange foot casings (athletic shoes), among many other things that cause dysfunction in the 0.75 square feet of feet that connect you to the Earth.

Exercises requiring single leg balance or significant stretching of the foot can elicit sudden cramping and burning pain in the plantar fascia, even if you don’t have full blown plantar fasciitis. Perform the manual toe stretches and self-massage demonstrated in the video below to loosen the bottom of your feet prior to exercising.
